David McLarty Gilliam

Our friend, former President of the INTDS (2003-2007),
David McLarty Gilliam
past away this year in June.

David in fact was not a target maker but target user. Nevertheless, he was always interested in target preparation technologies, eager to discuss details and limitations of the available procedures and open to modify his requirements whenever possible.

David’s contributions to the target development, in majority devoted to target characterisation, were much valued by the target community.

Acknowledging his contribution and devotion to the target maker community the Society awarded him the Award of Recognition in 2014. The ceremony took place during 27th INTDS World Conference held in Tokyo.

David was not only our President. Even after retirement he was still supporting the community as Treasurer and Corresponding Secretary sharing his time between duties as well recognised NIST expert in national security, and private hobbies such as Scottish dancing and singing in choir and a capella groups. When David was approaching retirement I asked him: I presume that finally you will have enough time for your musical activities? His answer was – Yes, but I like as well to learn and enjoy the scuba diving. And that he did. For many years.
